Hiba Kôjin Kagura
A remnant of the Middle Ages, the "myô" (manorial) system of village organization is still found in the Hiba Region of Hiroshima Prefecture. Honzan Sanbô Kôjin, the tutelary deity at the center of the "myô" system and the kitchen range god, still is worshiped earnestly there. The Kagura performance held on his festival day used to last four days and four nights, but has been shortened to three days and two nights or two days and one night. Long ago, it was only Shintô priests who performed the dances, but these days both priests and lay people perform them. |
