Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), the Minister of the Right (the number three position in the Heian Court after the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Left), is deceived by his political rival, Minister of the Left Fujiwara no Tokihira, and is exiled to faraway Dazai-fu (in Chikuzen-no-kuni, modern Fukuoka Prefecture). He tries to appeal his innocence to the Emperor, but his pleas are ignored, so he goes to the capital to avenge himself on Tokihira.

Sugawara no Michizane is stopped by his attendant from committing suicide after his appeal is ignored by the Emperor.
