At the end of the Heian Period, it was rumored that every night an apparition of the Thorn Demon of Mt.Ôe would appear in the vicinity of Kyôto's Modori-bashi Bridge and wreak suffering upon the good citizens living there. Minamoto no Raikô orders Watanabe no Tsuna, one of his four closest and most able retainers, to subdue the demon. Tsuna cuts off the Thorn Demon's arm, and the demon disappears into the clouds. This is the first part of the Mt.Ôe story.
